The Phoenix Public Transit Department is notifying riders of changes to City of Phoenix Valley Metro bus routes, effective on Jan. 23, 2012.

The changes are listed below:

Local bus routes 0-Central Ave. and 8-7th Ave. will have service modified in south Phoenix to accommodate the 77-Baseline Road extension.

METRO 2011 milestones

METRO light rail served 13.2 million riders in 2011, an increase of four percent over 2010. On average, 40,712 riders traveled using light rail on weekdays, 31,008 on Saturdays and 20,930 on Sundays/holidays.

“Our ridership continues to grow—2011 ridership exceeded the record set in 2010,” said METRO CEO Steve Banta. “More and more of the Valley is opting in to public transit. We look forward to working more collaboratively with regional partners in 2012 to make the transit trip even easier and more appealing for riders.”

Other notable highlights of 2011:

Generated $383,000 in system advertising across 2011; approximately 25 percent over budget.

Completed the ARRA-funded, 123-space park-and-ride lot at 7th Avenue and Camelback Road in March, which included shade canopies at this and two existing park-and-ride lots.

Launched a solar-cooled light rail station at 3rd Street/Washington in partnership with NRG and the City of Phoenix in July.

Served nearly 200,000 riders during Major League Baseball’s All-Star week with five, full All-Star train wraps and took part in the All-Star Red Carpet Parade.

Developed a mobile website in conjunction with Local First Arizona that shares the locally-owned restaurants and retail within a half-mile of the line.

Received environmental clearance in July and $35.5 million in the FY 2012 federal appropriations bill signed in November for the 3.1-mile Central Mesa light rail extension.

Determined 13 stop locations and several street configurations for the 2.6-mile Tempe Streetcar project.

Received a $1 million federal grant to conduct a 24-month Alternatives Analysis on the South Central Phoenix corridor.

Received a $2.7 million TIGGER (Transit Investments for Greenhouse Gas and Energy Reduction) grant award for a solar shade structure at the maintenance facility.

METRO light rail holiday and December special events service schedule‏

METRO light rail will operate a Sunday schedule on the observed holidays for Christmas Day, Monday, Dec. 26, and New Year’s Day, Monday, Jan. 2. Trains arrive every 20 minutes on Sundays and holidays. Buses will also operate using a Sunday schedule.

On Christmas Eve, Saturday, Dec. 24, METRO will operate a regular schedule, but without late-night service; trains will complete their last full trip from the end-of-line stations at 11 p.m.

For the Insight Bowl on Friday, Dec. 30, and New Year’s Eve, Saturday, Dec. 31, METRO will run regular service with additional trains to support pre- and post-event crowds. On Friday and Saturday nights, trains complete their last full trip from the end-of-line stations at 2 a.m. (the following morning).

The train will be adorned inside and out with seasonal décor promoting the idea of holiday shopping along light rail. Public transit receives $4 million in federal grants for green projects

METRO light rail and Valley Metro/RPTA have each received a TIGGER III (Transit Investments for Greenhouse Gas and Energy Reduction) grant award together totaling more than $4 million for energy-saving projects. Forty-six total projects were selected nationwide following a review of more than 250 applications.

METRO will use its $2.7 million grant to build a solar shade canopy to cover stored light rail vehicles at the Operations and Maintenance Center. The canopy will cover an expanse of 142,000 square feet and provide crucial shading to light rail vehicles while also generating enough electricity to satisfy nearly 100 percent of the maintenance facility’s power needs. METRO will seek private sector support to develop the project.

Valley Metro is being awarded $1.3 million to retrofit as many as 70 buses with an innovative electric engine cooling fan system that is cost effective and lowers pollutant emissions. Energy savings are anticipated with a nine percent reduction in fuel consumption. The original idea for the cooling system is developed from military vehicles and now being applied to transit buses.

“We appreciate the support from the FTA to innovate transit operations in the Valley,” said METRO CEO Steve Banta. “The infusion of federal dollars will put people to work as well as generate long-term operational cost savings. Transit investment is a solution to the stalled economy.”

TIGGER is a Federal Transit Administration competitive grant program that supports transit capital investments that reduce greenhouse gas emissions and/or energy use. The FTA seeks out projects that enhance operational efficiencies, demonstrate innovation and help achieve agency and federal sustainability goals.

He appreciates and has tirelessly promoted the connection between effective transportation solutions and quality of life for his residents.

METRO ridership peaks again in October‏

Breaking the record set in September 2011

PHOENIX, AZ — METRO light rail saw its highest ridership on record in September 2011, only to have the record broke again one month later. METRO had 1,258,711 total boardings in October, an eight percent increase over October 2010 and the highest in the system’s history.

“The increase can be attributed to a number of different factors including a large number of conventions, the Arizona Diamondbacks reaching the playoffs and Arizona State University football drawing a crowd,” said METRO CEO Steve Banta. “But it’s not solely events, it’s positive growth in response to good, quality service.”

METRO served a total of 55 special events, within a half-mile of the line, with an estimated attendance of 603,500. The events range from conventions, to concerts, to charity walks and festivals. The Arizona Diamondbacks had two home playoff games in October; however, the Phoenix Suns have yet to initiate their season, which typically starts in October.

METRO averaged 45,867 daily weekday riders in October; 36,725 daily riders on Saturdays; and 22,376 on Sundays. The Saturday average is also the highest on record.

What is modern streetcar? Get to know this transit mode with Sept. 18 vehicle display

METRO will host the ameriTRAM (TM) modern streetcar vehicle to show the local community what streetcar is and the value this mode will bring with the development of the Tempe Streetcar project in the Mill Avenue corridor.

Attendees will have the opportunity to walk on this vehicle and talk with staff about this transit mode and the Tempe Streetcar project. This is a free event and all are welcome!

Veterans Way/College light rail station

Manufactured by Kinkisharyo, the ameriTRAM (TM) offers hybrid technology where both overhead electricity and battery power are used to propel the vehicle. However, this is just one example of a modern streetcar vehicle. METRO will conduct a formal search for the Tempe Streetcar vehicle in 2012.

Tempe Streetcar will be the region’s first introduction to modern streetcar. The line will run 2.6 miles between Rio Salado Parkway and Southern Avenue in the Mill Avenue corridor. Construction is anticipated to begin in 2013 with completion by 2016. It will be built using a mix of regional Proposition 400 and federal dollars.

METRO light rail to commemorate 9/11‏

METRO will participate with transit agencies across the country in the nationwide Moment of Remembrance at 1 p.m. EST, 10 a.m. local, to honor the victims and 10th anniversary of 9/11.

At 10 a.m. on Sunday, METRO trains will pause and ring their bells for 30 seconds. Train operators will provide advance warning. METRO stations will also display an announcement sharing “9/11 – Never Forget.”

Beyond this short pause in service, METRO will run a normal Sunday schedule with trains running every 20 minutes.

CITY NEWS: BUS PASSENGERS WARNED OF POSSIBLE STRIKE‏

Transit riders who use or transfer to the 31 bus routes operated by the City of Phoenix’s contractor Veolia Transportation Services (VTS) should have back up plans for alternative travel to work, school, and other destinations beginning Wednesday morning, August 24, 2011.

Bus operators represented by Amalgamated Transit Union Local 1433 will be voting on a “best and final offer” from VTS, which is contracted to the City of Phoenix to provide transit service.

If bus service disruption should occur, VTS is contractually obligated to provide 60 percent of current service; however, there may be a gap of time in which no service is provided. As soon as possible, contingency plans based 30 percent, 45 percent, and 60 percent of current service will be put into effect depending on the resources available. Under the 60 percent plan, Veolia-operated routes will run the Sunday schedule found in the Transit Book or on-line at Valley Metro.org: local bus routes 0 (passes through the Phoenix Central neighborhood), 1, 7, 8 (passes through the Phoenix Central neighborhood), 10, 12, 15, 16, 19, 27, 34, 39, 44, 50, 52. 60, 70, 80, 90, 106, 122, 138, 154, 170, and 186.

SMART and DASH circulators and commuter buses Express 581, RAPID I-17, I-10-East and SR-51 will have fewer trips.

It is expected that routes operated by First Transit and MV Transportation, who are also contracted to the City of Phoenix and whose operators are represented by ATU 1433, will continue regular service.

VTS also provides some bus service into the cities of Glendale, Paradise Valley, Peoria, Scottsdale, Tempe, and Sun City.

The following are some alternative transportation suggestions to bus passengers who may be affected if labor agreements are not resolved:

Tips for Employers:

Help your bus-riding employees in advance by providing them with alternatives for getting to work. Following is a list of tips to help get employees to work should the labor negotiations affect bus service.

1. Once you’ve identified your regular bus riders, provide them with a list of other employees that live in or in close proximity to their zip code. Encourage them to contact fellow co-workers about carpooling if their bus service is affected.

2. If you have an internal carpool matching system, identify your regular bus riders and have them “matched” for carpools with co-workers.

3. Suggest that co-workers who set-up “contingency carpools” make arrangements in advance by discussing pick-up times and locations, and have them exchange phone numbers.

4. Consider working with companies that are in close proximity to help place your regular bus riders in existing carpools or with drive-alone commuters.

5. Promote the Web site, http://www.sharetheride.valleymetro.org, to regular bus riders and other commuters and encourage them to receive a match list of potential carpool partners.

6. Arrange for employees to telework if they have the types of jobs allowing them to work remotely.

Taxi program for people with disabilities debuts‏

Phoenix Public Transit adds ADA taxi coupon to current subsidy programs

The Phoenix Public Transit Department has launched a new taxi coupon program for Phoenix residents with disabilities. Called ADA Cab, the program supplements Phoenix’s heavily-used Dial-a-Ride program for people who are certified in accordance with the Americans With Disabilities Act (ADA). By working with local taxicab companies, the program allows participants to book trips at a subsidized rate, allowing for lower costs and more flexibility.

"The ADA Cab program bolsters our transit offerings for people with disabilities, and allows passengers to book their own travel when it is convenient for them," said Phoenix Public Transit Department Director Debbie Cotton.

To purchase coupons at a discount, participants must be Phoenix residents under the age of 65, and they must be ADA-certified. Certified participants can buy coupons to use to pay for cab trips. Each coupon is worth a dollar, and the $20-coupon books sell at 30 percent of their value, or $6 apiece. Participants can buy a maximum of $40 at that discount, and they can purchase an additional $40 at half price; in total, users can buy up to $80 worth of taxi vouchers monthly for $32. The coupons can be used for an entire trip, and can be combined with cash fares to travel further.

ADA Cab is one of several alternatives to fixed-route bus service that Phoenix Public Transit offers for people with disabilities. These options include Dial-a-Ride, which provides scheduled trips; the Senior Cab coupon program for Phoenix residents age 65 and over, as well as dialysis and work trip voucher programs.

The ADA Cab program is funded by the City of Phoenix and New Freedom grants from the Federal Transit Administration. The Phoenix City Council requested development of the alternative taxi program after same-day Dial-a-Ride services were eliminated from the department’s budget.

METRO light rail serves 200,000 across the five days of MLB All-Star‏

With the additional capacity of three-car trains, METRO light rail served more than 51,000 riders on game day, July 12, and nearly 200,000 across the five days (July 8 – 12) of Major League Baseball’s All-Star 2011. Typical daily ridership in July is 29,000.

“We put our best foot forward to provide good, quality service to those visiting the Phoenix area for the first time and to take care of our everyday riders,” said METRO CEO Steve Banta. “We appreciate the support of the Arizona Diamondbacks and Major League Baseball for seeing value in our service and allowing us to take part in the All-Star Red Carpet event on Tuesday.”

MLB All-Star-wrapped trains traveled through the Red Carpet parade on July 12 that welcomed All-Star players and their families into Chase Field, the site of the All-Star game later that evening. "METRO light rail has positively impacted our fan experience since its arrival," said D-backs President and CEO Derrick Hall. METRO light rail to expand capacity to support MLB All-Star

METRO light rail will increase capacity July 8 – 12 to serve the demand from MLB All-Star 2011. Third St./Washington and Jefferson are your stations for all the action.

METRO will follow the regular service schedule with trains running until after 11 p.m. on weekdays and 2 a.m. on weekends. The nine system park-and-ride lots are free to use on a first-come, first-serve basis.

Riders are encouraged to buy an all-day ($3.50 for adults; $1.75 for youth, seniors or persons with disabilities) or multi-day pass for unlimited rides in the purchased time period. Validate the pass with your first ride and keep the pass on you in the event of fare inspection.

Riders are also advised to expect crowds on board, at park-and-rides and at fare vending machines. Please be patient and plan ahead.

Let light rail be your ride to July 4 celebrations‏

METRO light rail will increase service on Monday, July 4, to support patrons of the Phoenix and Tempe holiday celebrations.

METRO will ramp up from 20-minute holiday service to running every 10 minutes by 5 p.m. for patrons’ ingress to these events. METRO will also be prepared with a similar level of service when the events end.

Service will be extended that evening to have the last full trips at midnight, rather than 11 p.m.

The system will be busy on this holiday. Passengers are advised to expect crowds on board, at park-and-rides and possible delays. Please be patient and plan ahead. Post-event, look for the proper queue line or train headsign to board a train headed in your return direction.

Passengers are also highly encouraged to purchase an all-day pass in advance for their round trip service on light rail. Buying in advance minimizes your time at the fare vending machines on the day-of. Buy your pass today online, from a transit center, retail outlet or station fare vending machine and simply activate it on July 4.

Reverse Lanes Update

Reverse lane changes are coming soon this summer. I was pleased to see my fellow Phoenix City Council members join me on a vote Wednesday night to address traffic safety concerns on the "Sevens," including the installation of a new left turn signal at 7th Avenue and Camelback Road. This is the first major change on these streets in 30 years! In addition, Streets Dept. will install new flashing beacons/lights and replace old signs with signs featuring universal traffic symbols. This contentious issue was difficult to negotiate and I've appreciated your support, participation and comments during this long process. Although elimination of the reverse lanes was the ultimate goal, I felt strongly about and fought hard for the left turn signal at this major intersection to help ease cut-through traffic in our neighborhoods. Once implemented, I would appreciate hearing your thoughts on whether these upgrades improve traffic concerns on the “Sevens” for our central city residents and businesses.

NRG Using the Sun to Make Phoenix Light Rail Riders "Cool"

PHOENIX, AZ and PRINCETON, NJ; June 16, 2011—NRG Thermal LLC, a subsidiary of NRG Energy Inc. (NYSE: NRG), is building an innovative system that uses solar power and the Company’s downtown district cooling system to provide cooling to the seating areas of the popular 3rd Street/Washington METRO light rail station. The system will launch this July and operate May through September annually, when summer temperatures often exceed 110 degrees.

“I was able to experience a similar system during a business trip to Dubai and brought the idea back to Phoenix,” said Phoenix Mayor Phil Gordon. “NRG took the ball and ran with it, investing its money and expertise to make this happen. This solar-powered system will make riding the light rail in Phoenix even cooler. It’s an example of public-private partnership at its best!”

“This partnership with NRG will have a direct and positive impact on our riders,” said METRO CEO Steve Banta. “In addition to being a welcomed customer amenity, this project is the first use of solar energy on our system. NRG plans to design and build this project in an unusually short time—by July 5, the week before the Major League Baseball All-Star game is held in Phoenix. Throughout the project’s construction, access to light rail service and station amenities, including fare vending machines, will not be affected.

Free and on-demand cooling for passengers will improve the rail system experience.

The system is environmentally friendly, leveraging the existing energy-efficient downtown district cooling system and using solar power to operate the air-conditioning/air-moving system.

NRG will cover the entire cost of building, operating and maintaining this new system, which means no additional costs to local residents and commuters.

The project will include an educational exhibit showcasing the technology and how it works.

METRO light rail to conduct emergency drill – Sunday, 5/22

For your awareness, METRO will conduct an emergency drill on Sunday, May 22, beginning at approximately 9 a.m. on the Tempe Town Lake light rail bridge. The drill will involve a train stopped on top of the bridge requiring volunteers to evacuate and emergency personnel to respond.

Drills are routinely executed and required to maintain safety certification and a high level of preparedness by METRO staff and local emergency responders.

During the drill, there will be minimal impact to regular service. The eastbound sides only of the Priest Drive/Washington, Center Parkway/Washington and Mill Avenue/Third Street stations will be active and providing service in both directions. Riders should refer to the train’s headsign to know which train to board. Slight delays to the schedule could occur as a result of this activity.

The ARRA-funded 7th Avenue/Camelback park-and-ride has opened offering METRO light rail passengers additional and shaded parking. The lot will provide greater access to the transit system and is well-timed considering the growth in ridership and gas prices.

To celebrate the lot’s opening, METRO, in partnership with the City of Phoenix, the Phoenix Suns and Hunter Contracting Co., will offer free breakfast and transit passes to those who want to try transit the morning of March 23!

Come down to be some of the first to park in the new lot, grab breakfast from neighboring food purveyors Copper Star Coffee, America’s Best Taco Shop and Fry’s and enjoy the energy of the Phoenix Suns Gorilla! Bus detours for P. F. Chang's 2011 marathon‏

P.F. CHANG’S MARATHON WILL DETOUR BUS AND LIGHT RAIL SERVICE

Passengers should check routes before traveling.

Bus routes and light rail service in Phoenix will be affected when the P.F. Chang’s Rock ‘n’ Roll Arizona Marathon rolls into town on Sunday, Jan. 16, 2011. Several bus routes will be detoured to allow for the event.

Both full and half marathons will start at the Wesley Bolin Memorial Plaza, near Washington Street and 14th Avenue in Phoenix and will finish on Packard Drive between ASU’s Sun Devil and Sun Angel Stadiums in Tempe. All roadways surrounding the Arizona State Capitol area will be closed to traffic beginning at 4 a.m.

Over 30,000 runners are expected to run the race through the streets of Phoenix, Scottsdale and Tempe. The race routes will be lined with live bands, volunteers, and spectators.

The event significantly impacts the area east of 7th Avenue and south of Camelback Road. Bus riders are strongly advised to consult www.ValleyMetro.org or call customer service at 602-253-5000 for any route detour updates. Also, it is highly recommended that bus and rail passengers give themselves extra time to reach their destinations. Bus service in Phoenix will be disrupted starting with race preparations at 4 a.m. and continuing during the race until approximately 1 p.m.

The entire line will re-open once police have indicated the marathon has cleared and it is safe to proceed, approximately 10 a.m.

METRO light rail served more than 12.6 million riders in 2010, 11 percent more than in 2009. On average, 39,335 riders traveled using light rail on weekdays, 29,329 on Saturdays and 19,170 on Sundays/holidays.

“It’s been another incredible year for METRO,” said CEO Steve Banta. “Riders continue to use our service in record numbers despite the difficult economy and service reductions in July. 2011 is likely to bring similar financial challenges and they will be met by keeping a customer focus and an eye for where efficiencies can be gained.”

METRO extends service in support of Insight Bowl‏

Tomorrow, Dec. 28, METRO light rail will extend its regular service hours and add additional trains to support patrons of the Insight Bowl. After midnight or the close of regular service, trains will continue to run and arrive at stations every half-hour through 2 a.m.

The closest light rail station to Sun Devil Stadium is Veterans Way/College Ave. Event-goers are encouraged to buy an all-day pass from any station fare vending machine for round trip service.

METRO light rail will operate on a Sunday schedule on Christmas Day, Saturday, Dec. 25, and New Year’s Day, Saturday, Jan. 1; trains arrive every 20 minutes on Sundays.

On Christmas Eve, Friday, Dec. 24, METRO will operate using a regular Friday schedule, but without late-night service; trains will complete their last full trip from the end-of-line stations at 11 p.m.

On Tuesday, Dec. 28, METRO will extend its regular service hours and add additional trains to support patrons of the Insight Bowl. After midnight, trains will arrive every half-hour through the last full trip from the end-of-line stations at 2 a.m. The closest station to Sun Devil Stadium is Veterans Way/College Ave.

Several northwest Valley Express routes also changing

The Phoenix Public Transit Department will provide commuters a different option to get to work in downtown Phoenix later this month, when extended RAPID™ I-17 service begins on Jan. 24, 2011 in far northwest Phoenix. RAPID™ is a limited-stop service that operates on freeways throughout Phoenix, using commuter-style vehicles. The Phoenix City Council approved changes to RAPID™, as well as changes to some Express routes and the Grand Avenue Limited. Details are below.

Express Service

Elimination of Express routes 570, 582, and 590 (each travel on Central Avenue between Indian School and Thomas Roads)

Changes to transit service were made after a study of Express and RAPID™ commuter routes by Phoenix Public Transit planning staff showed high demand in northern parts of Phoenix, and underutilization of Express routes. The changes will save an estimated $300,000 annually.

“We had to look at all forms of transit service for savings and efficiency, including RAPID and Express,” said Phoenix Public Transit Department Director Debbie Cotton. “The changes to I-17 RAPID service will offer an alternative to driving for some users, while allowing us to direct funds to service for Phoenix riders who have provided the backbone of our city’s transit funding.”

BUS BENCH PILOT PROGRAM LETS RESIDENTS SUPPORT TRANSIT PROJECTS

Residents can pay to help install, maintain transit furniture

The City of Phoenix Public Transit Department is piloting a new sponsorship program for transit furniture installation and upkeep. In an effort to aid interested individuals in contributing to public transit, the Bus Bench Memorial Program allows for many levels of support, from monthly cleaning of bus stops, to installation of transit furniture at suitable locations. The pilot bus bench memorial program grew from a resident’s suggestion, and is intended to generate additional transit system revenue.

"I would like to thank the District 6 citizen who brought this idea to my office. It is because of resident ideas that new programs like this one are possible,” said Councilman Sal DiCiccio. “I hope residents throughout the city will choose to get involved with the Bus Bench program."

Bus stops to move at Central Station during airlift Saturday, Dec. 11

Central Station Temporary Closure for Bus and Light Rail Service
Saturday morning, December 11, 2011

Phoenix’s Central Station, Central Ave. and Van Buren St., will be temporarily closed to bus and light rail service from 5 to 11 a.m. on Saturday, Dec. 11, 2010. Surrounding streets will be closed to pedestrians and traffic while an airlift for a nearby construction project takes place.

Metro trains will not stop at the platforms at Central Station and local city buses will move to temporary stops.

Light rail riders can board and deboard at the Washington/Central and Jefferson/First Avenue platforms. There is also a possibility of short westbound delays.

Bus passengers can pick up buses at one of three temporary stops:

·Routes 0 northbound (use the RAPID stop).

·Routes 0 southbound at the northwest corner of Washington and Third St.

Transit passengers will not have access to the fare vending machines at Central Station during this time so they must purchase transit passes at other light rail platforms or on board buses.

Bus stops to move during Central Station construction‏

As Phoenix’s Central Station undergoes another phase of refurbishment, some bus stops will be relocated to surrounding streets and the customer service office will move to a temporary trailer on the site. The move is effective Monday, November 15, 2010. Go to http://www.valleymetro.org/bus/transit_centers/central_station/ to find a map of relocated bus stops; the light rail platforms are not affected.

The customer service office, where fare media is sold, will be closed from noon on Wednesday, Nov. 10 and reopen at 8 a.m. on Monday, Nov. 15 for the move.

In the meantime, passengers are encouraged to use the fare vending machines located on the light rail platforms to buy transit passes which can be used both on Valley Metro buses and METRO light rail.

The City of Phoenix received $5 million in American Recovery and Reinvestment Act funding to refurbish the transit center located at Central Avenue and Van Buren. At the project completion in summer 2011, the transit offices will be expanded to accommodate the staff and functions of customer service and of the Police Transit Bureau. Central Station will also have updated shade structures, lighting, and signage; and a number of sustainable features including a solar power system for the site.

Public Transit Seeks Comment on Commuter Bus Changes‏

The Phoenix Public Transit Department is seeking public comment on proposed changes to west Phoenix Express and RAPID™ commuter bus routes, that serve the I-17 corridor, as well as Grand Avenue Limited service. Express Routes 570, 581, 582 and 590 provide service in north and west Phoenix and in the City of Glendale. The Grand Avenue Limited travels through Peoria, Glendale and Phoenix. These routes could be reduced or eliminated.

Additionally, the RAPID™ I-17 service is proposed for extension to a new facility, the Happy Valley Park-and-Ride. Changes would be effective in January, 2011

METRO stresses driver safety with 'Stop on red' train wrap‏

METRO light rail unveiled a new train wrap today. It showcases a bold, yet simple, public safety message: Stop on red. Obeying traffic signals is key to safely sharing the road with the 20-mile, in-street METRO light rail system.

“We wanted to use our most visual asset – our light rail vehicle – to convey the importance of this message,” said CEO Steve Banta. “Safety remains a METRO priority and we continue to think of creative ways to keep the message top of mind for Valley drivers and passengers.”

The Stop on Red wrapped train is now in service. The wrap will remain through the fall and winter – a busy ridership and visitor season for both METRO and the Valley of the Sun.

“The Stop on Red train wrap is a great way to remind drivers to use caution around light rail when it matters most – when they're driving!” said METRO Board Chairman and Phoenix Councilman Tom Simplot. “METRO is using this innovative way to take the safety message right to the street.”

Also launched today is the Stop on Red online pledge. The pledge is intended to solidify drivers’ commitments to stopping on red and remaining an aware driver. As incentive, each person to sign will be entered into a drawing for 52 free all-day transit passes – a little encouragement to leave the car behind and try transit once a week, for a year.

METRO will use its most visual asset – a light rail vehicle – to display an important message: stop on red.

Light rail safety remains a priority for METRO. While the number of collisions between light rail vehicles and automobiles has decreased by more than half in 2010, METRO and its member cities want to see this record continue to improve.

The intent of this train wrap is to serve as a powerful reminder to drive aware and stop on red lights. Red light (or arrow) running has been the primary cause for light rail-involved collisions.

Also on Thursday, METRO will initiate an online pledge seeking drivers’ commitments to stopping on red. Each person to sign up will be entered into a drawing for free transit passes, to encourage transit use at least one day a week. Bus riders warned about possible strike‏

Transit riders who use or transfer to the 33 bus routes operated by the City of Phoenix’s contractor Veolia Transportation Services should have back up plans for alternative travel to work, school, and other destinations beginning Monday morning, October 4, 2010.

No agreements have resulted from the negotiations between Veolia and its labor unions and the most recent extension ends midnight Sunday, October 3, 2010 for two of the three unions. A number of actions could be taken including a call for a strike.

If the strike is affirmative, Veolia is contractually obligated to provide 60 percent of current service; however, there may be a gap of time in which no service is provided. As soon as possible, contingency plans based 30 percent, 45 percent, and 60 percent of current service will be put into effect depending on the resources available.

Under the 60 percent plan, Veolia-operated routes will run on other schedules: local bus routes will use the Sunday bus schedule and RAPID I-17, I-10-East and SR-51 will have fewer trips. Express Routes 581, 582, and 590; the DASH Phoenix downtown business circulator; and the SMART neighborhood circulator in Sunnyslope will be suspended. Veolia operates bus service via a contract with the Phoenix Public Transit Department which also provides some service into the cities of Glendale, Peoria, Scottsdale, and Sun City.

Tips for Employers:

Help your bus-riding employees in advance by providing them with alternatives for getting to work. Following is a list of tips to help get employees to work should the labor negotiations affect bus service.

1. Once you’ve identified your regular bus riders, provide them with a list of other employees that live in or in close proximity to their zip code. Encourage them to contact fellow co-workers about carpooling if their bus service is affected.

2. If you have an internal carpool matching system, identify your regular bus riders and have them “matched” for carpools with co-workers.

3. Suggest that co-workers who set-up “contingency carpools” make arrangements in advance by discussing pick-up times and locations, and have them exchange phone numbers.

4. Consider working with companies that are in close proximity to help place your regular bus riders in existing carpools or with drive-alone commuters.

5. Promote the Web site, sharetheride.valleymetro.org, to regular bus riders and other commuters and encourage them to receive a match list of potential carpool partners.

6. Arrange for employees to telework if they have the types of jobs allowing them to work remotely.

Transit Labor Unions Agree to extend talks to Sept. 30 2010

Labor negotiations are continuing between Phoenix’s transit operations contractor Veolia Transportation Services and its labor unions: the International Union of Operating Engineers Local No. 428 (mechanics) and Teamsters Local 104 (maintenance staff) have both agreed to a Sept. 30, 2010 extension.

Amalgamated Transit Union Local No.1433 (bus operators) has a labor negotiations extension until the end of September 2010.

Central Mesa light rail extension is one step closer to federal funding‏

The Federal Transit Administration has approved METRO light rail’s request to enter Project Development for the Central Mesa light rail extension. This marks the first step in receiving federal project approval and ultimately federal funds to build the 3.1-mile extension on Main Street from the current end-of-line at Sycamore, through downtown Mesa to Mesa Drive.

“This is a significant milestone for the Central Mesa light rail extension,” said Mesa Vice Mayor and METRO Board Vice Chairman Kyle Jones. “It allows us to begin designing the project that we’ve all worked so hard to develop over the past three years.”

With this approval, preliminary engineering work can begin and will be conducted by Jacobs Engineering. METRO has contracted with Jacobs for preliminary and final engineering that will collectively take approximately two years and be followed shortly by construction. The Central Mesa extension is scheduled for completion in 2016.

“Central Mesa is a solid project,” said Steve Banta, METRO CEO. “While the FTA process is competitive, our project received a favorable rating and should fare well in its application for federal grant money.” The project cost is estimated at $200 million and will be paid for using a mix of regional and federal funds.

Re-election of METRO light rail Board chairs

Phoenix Councilman Tom Simplot and Mesa Vice Mayor Kyle Jones will remain as METRO light rail’s Board of Directors Chairman and Vice Chairman, respectively, for fiscal year 2010 – 2011.

“We are extremely pleased to have these two innovative leaders on board to continue to guide METRO on a path of growth and quality service for our current and future riders,” said Stephen R. Banta, METRO CEO.

Councilman Simplot has served as METRO Board Chairman for the past four years; Vice Mayor Jones as Vice Chairman for the past year.

“I am proud to continue to serve as Chair of the METRO Board of Directors,” said Councilman Simplot. “In less than two years, we have seen consistent increases in ridership, expanded late night service and provided a METRO experience that continues to exceed riders' expectations. I look forward to building on this foundation in the coming year.”

The City of Mesa’s Board involvement will be critical as METRO moves forward with the Central Mesa light rail extension from the current end-of-line at Sycamore, through downtown Mesa, to Mesa Drive by 2016.

“It’s been an honor to represent Mesa on the METRO Board of Directors and I look forward to continuing my service as Vice Chair during what will continue to be an exciting and challenging time, especially with the light rail extension,” said Vice Mayor Jones.

Transit Bus Strike‏

As you may have heard, transit employee unions are negotiating with their employer Veolia Transportation Services on new Collective Bargaining Agreements. Veolia is contracted to the City of Phoenix to operate 33 of the 99 Valley Metro routes. If an agreement is not reached by Sunday, August 15, the unions could vote to continue the negotiations or go on strike as early as Monday, August 16.

If a strike is called, this would severely reduce service on the Veolia-operated routes. A plan is being developed to keep the buses running but at a reduce frequency. A contingency plan will be posted as soon as possible on our website. I am a member of an architecture design and community think tank studio, Studio 1to1.

We are currently working with the ASU Stardust Center in a study of the effect of high capacity transit on urban and community life in the City of Phoenix, Arizona.

The goal is of the project is to develop a stakeholder engagement process the allows for the many perspective to be integrated to a successful and sustainable solution the meets the need and wants of current and future Phoenix residents living in a dynamic urban environment

The final deliverables for this project will include examples of urban design development sceneries, policy recommendations, sustainability guidelines, finance mechanisms needed for success, mixed and affordable housing strategies, and the development of public and private stakeholder engagement processes that is necessary for success.

The project calls for a documentary video, presentation and community engagement process designed to inform audiences on the issues, opportunities and potential transformational effects of recent federal policies and new directions in transit oriented development.

The documentary video in addition to a presentation will be used to obtain 50 million in funding in the form of public and private grants and investments that will make actionable improvements to the urban environment of downtown Phoenix possible.

We would like to hold a small focus group with you and other residents to better understand your unique perspective and include them into the presentation.

METRO to support July 4 celebrations

METRO light rail will increase service on Sunday, July 4, to support patrons of the Phoenix and Tempe holiday celebrations.

METRO will ramp up from regular Sunday service during the late afternoon to be at near 10-minute frequencies for patrons’ ingress to the events. METRO will also be prepared with a similar service level for when the events end.

Service will be extended that evening to the last full trips occurring at midnight, rather than 11 p.m.

The system will be busy on this holiday. Passengers are advised to expect crowds on board, at park-and-rides and possible delays. Please be patient and plan ahead. Post-event, look for the proper queue line to get you on board a train headed in your return direction.

Buy your transit pass in advance

Passengers are highly encouraged to purchase an all-day pass in advance for their round trip service on bus and/or light rail. Buying in advance minimizes your time at the fare vending machines altogether on the day-of. Buy your pass today from a transit center, retail outlet or station fare vending machine and simply activate it on July 4.

Overflow parking

METRO park-and-ride lots are free to use on a first-come, first-serve basis. If any of the lots become full, we encourage you to try the next closest lot.

National Day of Action March in Central Phoenix

The closures will begin at Third Street and Indian School Road at approximately 10 a.m. The roads will be closed ahead of the marchers and each road will be opened as soon as marchers are safely beyond the intersection. May 29 bus detours announced

The Phoenix Public Transit Department will have several bus routes on detour starting at 10 a.m., May 29, 2010, in response to a march to the state capitol. Buses affected are Route 0, Route 1, Route 3, Route 7, Route 8, Route 10, Route 12, Route 15, Route 17, Route 19 and Route 29, and possibly Route 41. Some bus stop locations around Central Station will be moved during the event; and service may be delayed until the march concludes. Details regarding detours of each route are below. Light rail may experience delays as a result of the large crowd, but will remain in service while safety permits. Please plan your trip considering these potential delays and detours.

To limit delays in travel, passengers are being asked to purchase bus and light rail passes in advance at transit centers or light rail kiosks. In celebration, scavenger hunt and prize to take place over the weekend

PHOENIX — METRO light rail, US Airways Center and the Phoenix Suns announced today the renewal of the “Rail Ride Event” program. The program, originally launched in October 2009, allows consumers who purchase a ticket to any event at US Airways Center to ride METRO light rail at no additional cost, on the day of the event.

Through Rail Ride, METRO recognizes US Airways Center event tickets as valid light rail fare on the day of the event for four hours prior to the start of the event, through the end of the transit day. This innovative ticket partnership between METRO and US Airways Center has been renewed for an additional five years with action taken by the METRO Board of Directors yesterday (Wednesday, May 19).

“This program is a slam dunk! It’s an easy way for event-goers to enhance their downtown experience by using light rail,” said METRO Board Chairman and Phoenix Councilman Tom Simplot. “We’re thrilled and proud to have such great partners as the US Airways Center and Phoenix Suns.”

In September 2009, the METRO Board approved a one-year program with US Airways Center to combine event and light rail ticketing. The agreement was established to cover the 2009-2010 Phoenix Suns and Mercury seasons as well as all other ticketed events at US Airways Center, including the many concerts and family shows. The program has proven effective in recovering necessary fare revenue and providing customers with an additional amenity. The program’s renewal will be effective through June 2015.

“US Airways Center and the Phoenix Suns are extremely pleased with our one-year pilot Rail Ride Event program,” said Rick Welts, President and CEO of the Phoenix Suns. “The feedback we have received from our season ticket holders and guest has been overwhelmingly positive and we look forward to extending our relationship.”

To celebrate, METRO and US Airways Center invite fans and riders alike to take part in a scavenger hunt to have a chance to win US Airways Center event tickets. Taking place Friday, May 21 – Sunday, May 23, the scavenger hunt along the METRO system will task participants with finding letters, that when unscrambled, reveal a secret word. METRO ridership reaches its high in April‏

METRO light rail has achieved record ridership in April with the most riders in one month, in one day and the highest average weekday ridership since the system’s opening in December 2008.

METRO served 1,208,924 total riders in April 2010, resulting in an average weekday ridership of 44,932, average Saturday ridership of 34,533 and average Sunday and holiday ridership of 20,573. These numbers break the previous record set in March 2010 that saw ridership of 1.16 million and an average weekday of 41,413. 2010 ridership is accelerating past totals achieved in 2009.

METRO also received its highest ridership day on record with 55,679 riders on Monday, April 5, 2010, the date of the Arizona Diamondbacks 2010 season home opener.

Public Transit Department asks users on feedback about proposed budget‏

PHOENIX PUBLIC TRANSIT NEEDS FEEDBACK ON NEW BUDGET CUTS

Feedback will shape response to state funding cuts totaling approx. $11 million

The Phoenix Public Transit Department is soliciting public feedback on new budget cuts required because of actions taken to balance the State of Arizona budget. The department will hold community outreach events in each of Phoenix’s eight council districts to get residents’ opinions of possible service reductions. The public can also provide input online through an online survey at www.phoenix.gov/publictransit or by e-mailing pubtrans@phoenix.gov with the subject line “Budget Cuts Feedback.”

In the budget passed by the legislature in March, a sweep of the Local Transportation Assistance Funds (LTAF) cost the City of Phoenix approximately $11 million over the remainder of this fiscal year and next year, 2010-11. These new reductions are in addition to service changes approved in the city budget adopted in March by the Phoenix City Council. These new reductions could affect all city transit services, including local bus routes and RAPID routes, as well as Dial-a-Ride service.

Options for changes to service include elimination or service reduction of certain bus routes; reduction of Dial-a-Ride service to federally-mandated minimums; and partial reduction or complete elimination of the Phoenix Neighborhood Circulator program, a free transit service that travels through communities, and connects residents to schools, shops and other public services. Public Transit Department staff will be asking for feedback from the public at the following events, and will also be available to answer questions.

Changes are being considered to address a decline in sales tax revenue as a result of the slow economy. Sales tax revenue is the largest funding source for transit service Valleywide; fare revenue supports the balance of operating costs at approximately 25 percent. While METRO ridership has surpassed all first-year projections, riders’ fare revenue contribution cannot keep up with the drop in sales tax collections.

Public input will help METRO and its member cities determine the fiscal year 2010 – 11 METRO operating budget and schedule. The budget is scheduled for Board approval in the May timeframe with any changes occurring on July 26, 2010.

Phoenix General Plan Update - We need your help!‏

Many of you may have been wondering what is happening with the Phoenix General Plan Update. We received a lot of input from the community during the months of October and November, but also noticed that attendance at our workshops dropped off. After taking a look at the input, it was determined that a community dialogue is needed so that all interested parties can hear the diverse comments received and help create a shared vision (or visions) for Phoenix.

The community dialogue will be held on March 6th from 8:30 am to 12:30 pm at PhoenixCity Hall with the primary purpose being to develop a vision or visions for Phoenix by answering the question “Where do we want to go?” This would be followed by a second workshop in May that focuses on the question “How do we get there?” The second workshop will allow participants to develop action items based upon the visions created at the first workshop.

We won’t be able to make progress on either of these questions without active participation from people who care about the future of Phoenix. Could this be you?

METRO is open for advertising with first train wrap

PHOENIX — METRO light rail and advertising program administrator, CBS Outdoor, have earned their first sale with a train wrap by Grand Canyon University. The wrapped vehicle will makes its launch as early as Sunday, Feb. 14 and will be out in service for the next six months.

The METRO Board of Directors amended the agency advertising policy to permit sales of vehicle wraps, vehicle floor decals, station wraps and station display case advertising in July 2009. METRO finalized an agreement with CBS Outdoor to sell the advertising inventory in October.

Progress photos of the train wrap installation will be available this afternoon on METRO’s Facebook page.

Visit a city budget hearing, or respond online to changes affecting local bus, Dial-A-Ride and light rail.

The Public Transit Department is soliciting comment on its proposals for the citywide 2010-11 budget. A series of public hearings will present proposed changes to the city of Phoenix budget; included in the presentation to the public are proposed changes to transit service within the city of Phoenix set to occur on July 26, 2010.

The proposed changes may impact fixed-route bus service, para-transit service, and light rail service by a reduction in operating hours and frequency of service and elimination of bus routes. METRO light rail provided service to more than 11.3 million riders in 2009. Ridership has far exceeded first-year projections by 34 percent on weekdays, 33 percent on Saturdays and 61 percent on Sundays and holidays.

Other notable figures achieved in 2009:

The highest daily ridership occurred Dec. 31 with 53,216 riders.

The highest monthly ridership occurred in October with 1,124,924 riders.

The busiest station by boardings was Sycamore/Main in Mesa followed by Montebello/19th Ave., University Dr./Rural, Central Station and Roosevelt/Central Ave.

METRO served more than 400 major events along its line.

One-thousand daily passengers used the METRO-PHX Airport Shuttle for access to Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport.

METRO installs first advertising wraps on four light rail vehicles in promotion of the NBA All-Star event.

May 2009:

METRO service impact on Jan. 17 due to P.F. Chang’s Rock ‘n’ Roll Marathon

In accommodation of the P.F. Chang’s Rock ‘n’ Roll Marathon and ½ Marathon on Sunday, Jan. 17, METRO light rail will not provide morning service to stations north of McDowell Rd. The following stations will be without service until approximately 10 a.m., or until the race has cleared:

· Montebello/19th Avenue

· 19th Avenue/Camelback Road

· 7th Avenue/Camelback Road

· Central Avenue/Camelback

· Campbell/Central Avenue

· Indian School/Central Avenue

· Osborn/Central Avenue

· Thomas/Central Avenue

· Encanto/Central Avenue

METRO will provide service to the rest of the line – McDowell/Central Avenue through Main/Sycamore – beginning at 5 a.m. METRO will offer 12-15 minute service before and during the race when traditional Sunday frequency is every 20 minutes. Additional trains will be deployed based on the demand at the race finish area in Tempe. The entire line will re-open once police have indicated the marathon has cleared and it is safe to proceed, approximately 10 a.m.

There are also significant bus detours as a result of this event. Select routes in Phoenix, Scottsdale and Tempe will be impacted. All transit riders are strongly advised to consult http://www.valleymetro.org/ or call customer service at (602) 253-5000 for route detour updates and give themselves extra time to reach their destination.

As with all special events that occur along the line, METRO encourages the purchase of an all-day pass when first boarding for round trip service. An all-day or more pass eliminates the need to wait in line to buy another single ride fare when leaving the special event. Single ride fares should only be used when traveling one way. All pass types can be purchased at fare vending machines located at each station. They accept cash, credit, debit and change.

METRO hires new CEO, Steve Banta

An employment contract has been finalized between METRO light rail and its new CEO Steve Banta. Banta is expected to start work on January 20, 2010.

On Wednesday, the METRO Board ratified the negotiated employment contract and submitted it to Banta for his review and, ultimately, his signature.

“We are extremely pleased to move forward with Mr. Banta,” said METRO Board Chairman and Phoenix Vice Mayor Tom Simplot. “The METRO light rail organization will benefit from his years of experience managing an operation that is a model in the transit industry.”

Banta has worked in progressively important management roles for several public transit agencies including in his current role as TriMet’s executive director of operations as well as in San Diego, Washington, D.C., Los Angeles, Dallas and Pittsburgh. He has more than 23 years in the transit industry, starting his career in 1986 repairing railcars. “I appreciate the Board’s confidence in me,” said Banta. “I look forward to building a similar level of trust with the metro Phoenix community and add to the excellent work already accomplished.”

Current CEO Rick Simonetta has served as METRO’s first CEO over the last six years; his term ends December 31, 2009. METRO General Counsel Mike Ladino will serve as acting CEO until Banta’s arrival.

Simonetta has more than 38 years in the transit industry, working in all facets. METRO has been his first start-up adventure and, under his leadership, METRO opened on time, within budget and is now experiencing ridership that surpasses all projections. “I’m leaving this organization in very capable hands,” said Simonetta.

Last ride of METRO CEO Rick Simonetta – photo opp today at 4:55 p.m.

The Conference of Minority Transportation Officials (COMTO) and WTS along with the generous support of Friends of Transit (FOT) and Arizona Transit Association (AzTA) have teamed up to host the last ride and farewell reception for METRO light rail CEO Rick Simonetta. Simonetta departs as METRO’s first chief executive at the end of this year.

Simonetta will be honored by his peers and city leadership for his six years of service and expertise, opening up the Valley’s first light rail system on time and on budget.

A train will leave the Sycamore/Main station in Mesa at 4:10 p.m.* with Simonetta and Mesa city leadership and staff on board. The train will travel west to pick up leaders in both Tempe and Phoenix. The group will disembark at Central/McDowell station and proceed to the reception site, the Phoenix Art Museum.

METRO Board enters negotiations with final CEO candidate‏

METRO light rail Board of Directors extends an offer of employment to Stephen R. Banta to serve as METRO’s new Chief Executive Officer. Staff will begin work with METRO member cities to negotiate a fair and equitable employment contract with Mr. Banta. The CEO selection will be made official with the Board’s approval of the contract.

“This was a very difficult [selection] process,” said METRO Board Chairman and Phoenix Vice Mayor Tom Simplot following the Board’s executive session where the two final candidates – Mr. Banta and Deborah Wathen Finn – were discussed. “Either candidate could take the reins and lead us with outstanding success; they are each professionals and top of their class.”

Mr. Banta presently serves as the Executive Director of Operations for TriMet, the transit authority for the Portland metropolitan region. TriMet is the 7th largest transit system in America providing more than 350,000 trips each weekday on its 52 miles of light rail, 14.7 miles of commuter rail and 81 bus lines. Prior to TriMet, Banta served as the Chief Operations Officer with the Port Authority of Allegheny County in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania for eight years. He has more than 23 years of experience in the transit industry, starting his career in 1986 repairing railcars.

Current CEO Rick Simonetta will stay in this role through December 31, 2009.

METRO October ridership – another record-breaking month

METRO ridership reaches an all-time high with 1,124,924 riders in October. With 70,000 more riders than the high in September, daily ridership peaked at 41,077 for the average weekday, 30,517 for the average Saturday and 17,160 for the average Sunday/holiday in October.

In September, METRO ridership totaled 1,054,286 boardings, resulting in an average weekday ridership of 40,772, average Saturday ridership of 28,612 and average Sunday and holiday ridership of 16,726.

METRO had its single highest ridership day on Friday, Oct. 2 with 50,562 riders. Several factors could be contributors to this peak including the arrival of the fall season and visitors as well as events such as the First Friday art walk in downtown Phoenix.

METRO achieved 50,000+ riders one other time on May 13 during ASU’s spring commencement featuring President Barack Obama. METRO served 50,011 riders that day.

Arts organizations celebrate with admission discounts

METRO and 39 Valley arts and culture venues are marking National Arts and Humanities Month with a new light rail destination guide and some great deals on fall arts events for the whole family.

METRO Board Chair and Phoenix Vice Mayor Tom Simplot joined Mayors Hugh Hallman and Scott Smith at the Roosevelt and Central Avenue light rail station today to unveil the new Arts and Culture Ride Guide. The three were flanked by a group of costumed performers, including a ballerina, Shakespearean actress and a dinosaur wrangler.

“The guide makes it easy to take advantage of the many incredible arts opportunities on the line, ” Simplot said, “and supporting the arts is good for the city. More than six million people visit Phoenix arts venues each year, producing millions of dollars in tax revenues and benefiting nearby businesses.”

Tempe Mayor Hugh Hallman, a member of the METRO board, noted that arts and culture organizations are important economic drivers in the East Valley, too.

“These organizations and their patrons generate more than $82 million a year in the East Valley alone,” he said, “and support more than 1,700 jobs in restaurants, hotels and other related businesses.”

Mesa Mayor Scott Smith encouraged Valley residents to take advantage of discounts being offered by many of the venues.

“Taking your kids to the museum and to live performances are the kinds of family experiences that make great memories,” he said. “And riding the train there is half the fun.”

Eleven venues on the METRO line are celebrating the release of the guide by offering reduced admission to transit riders. A listing of special offers and a downloadable version of the Arts and Culture Ride Guide are available online at http://www.metrolightrail.org/. The printed guide is available at visitor centers, arts venues and hotels along the light rail line.

The 33-page full-color METRO Arts and Culture Ride Guide features photos, descriptions and contact information for each venue on the line in Phoenix, Tempe and Mesa, along with station maps and bus connections. Getting to great entertainment is as easy as (1) choosing the venue, (2) using the guide to find the nearest light rail station and (3) buying a transit pass.

An all-day transit pass is only $3.50 for adults, half-price for children 6 to 18, and free for kids five and under. Passes are available at vending machines located at all light rail stations.

METRO and 39 arts organizations will mark National Arts and Humanities Month with the release of a pocket-size guide to arts venues along the light rail line.

Highway speed limits = deaths. In 1974 Congress set highway speed limits at 55mph; purpose was to reduce gas consumption. In 1995 states were then allowed to set their own speed limits. Researchers at the University of Illinois estimate that 12,500 more highway deaths occurred from 1995 to 2005 because of the increase in allowed speed, even when taking into consideration more cars, introduction of air bags and other car construction improvements. METRO September ridership - highest month on record‏

An average of 40,000 riders per weekday used METRO light rail in September, contributing to the highest monthly ridership in METRO history.

More than one million boardings occurred in September for a total of 1,054,286 riders, creating an average weekday ridership of 40,772, average Saturday ridership of 28,612 and average Sunday and holiday ridership of 16,726.

Ridership has grown more than 170,000 boardings since August and 300,000 since the lowest point in July.

Vice Mayors Tom Simplot (Phoenix) and Kyle Jones (Mesa) made a friendly wager back in August regarding which end-of-line station is the busiest by boardings. Through September, each city made attempts to attract more riders to their station – Montebello/19th Ave. in Phoenix and Sycamore/Main St. in Mesa. The terms: the city with the least amount of September boardings would clean the winning city’s station.

Rail Ride Event to officially begin with Game 2 of the WNBA Finals Thursday night

WHAT:

METRO light rail, US Airways Center, Phoenix Suns and Phoenix Mercury will officially launch the Rail Ride Event program during an announcement tomorrow (Wednesday, September 30) at 6:30 a.m. The announcement will take place at the Park and Ride location on 19th Avenue and Montebello Avenue, across from the light rail station platform.

The unique program will be activated for the first time when the Phoenix Mercury take on the Indiana Fever on Thursday, October 1 in Game 2 of the WNBA Finals at US Airways Center. Tip-off is set for 6 p.m.

Through Rail Ride Event, METRO will recognize any US Airways Center event ticket as valid light rail fare on the day of the event, for four hours prior to the start of the event, through the end of the transit day. The program will begin tomorrow and run through September 30, 2010.

Transit-venue partnership builds light rail into downtown events

METRO light rail, US Airways Center and the Phoenix Suns have developed a unique partnership to build transit into downtown Phoenix events. The “Rail Ride Event” program allows consumers who purchase a ticket to an event at US Airways Center to ride METRO light rail at no additional cost on the day of the event.

Under this one-year pilot program, METRO will recognize US Airways Center event tickets as valid light rail fare starting four hours before the event through the end of the transit day. The program begins October 1, 2009 and runs through September 30, 2010. It is expected to generate up to $340,000 in revenue for METRO.

US Airways Center hosts nearly 200 events each year, including the Phoenix Suns and Mercury basketball games, concerts and family shows. All ticketed US Airways Center events are included in the Rail Ride Event program.

"This program will encourage use of the METRO system as a great way to get to and from events at US Airways Center," said METRO Board Chairman and city of Phoenix Vice Mayor Tom Simplot. "The new riders will soon discover how convenient, efficient and safe the system is."

“Suns fans who used light rail to travel to games last year told us that being able to avoid traffic and parking issues, as well as the ease and convenience of the trip, resulted in an experience that enhanced their enjoyment of attending a game,” said Phoenix Suns President and CEO Rick Welts. “We appreciate the willingness and creativity the leadership at METRO light rail demonstrated in developing this program for all US Airways Center events.”

METRO CEO Rick Simonetta called it a “perfect fit.”

“Special event and recreation-oriented trips are already a significant portion of our ridership, nearly 40 percent,” said Simonetta. “Teaming up with the Suns and a great venue like US Airways Center just takes it to the next level.”

The city of Phoenix is about to begin a very important project and we need your help. Every ten years Arizona State Law requires cities to update their general plans. The General Plan provides comprehensive direction for the growth, conservation and redevelopment of all physical aspects of the city through goals, policies and recommendations. This document is intended to be both long range and visionary and to provide guidance for actions over a long period of time. This project will be broken into two phases. Phase I - visioning, and Phase II - policy plan development. Phase I will kick off on October 5, 2009 and continue through June, 2010. Phase II will begin in September, 2010 and continue through September, 2011. The plan will be presented to the public for approval at an election in September, 2012.

Survey reveals METRO rider characteristics‏

Thirty-five percent of METRO riders surveyed are new to transit. Forty percent use light rail to travel between home and a destination other than work, such as attending special events, enjoying a night out with friends or running errands.

These and other key insights were revealed from a METRO intercept survey conducted to better understand how and why riders use light rail. The survey was carried out in April 2009 using verbal interviews with more than 3,000 weekday and Saturday passengers ranging from regular commuters, students, seniors and recreational users. The data will be used to help METRO in its future planning efforts.

Other key survey findings:

Nearly 30 percent of respondents use METRO to commute between home and work exclusively.

Approximately 20 percent of respondents use METRO for trips where neither end of the trip is home (i.e. going to/from lunch during the workday, meeting friends after work or going to school from the workplace).

Forty-five percent of respondents walk, bike or skate to a METRO station to connect with light rail; the other half either drive to a METRO station, usually using a park-and-ride facility (29 percent) or connect from a bus (26 percent).

Sixty-eight percent of respondents have at least one car available for the trip they were making on light rail.

PHOENIX PUBLIC TRANSIT PROGRESSES WITH ARRA PROJECTS

$29.1 million in grants support Phoenix transit infrastructure; $88 million for region

The Phoenix Public Transit Department announced it was awarded $88.8 million in American Recovery & Reinvestment Act (ARRA) funds for projects in the Phoenix/Mesa urbanized area. The portion of these funds dedicated to city of Phoenix projects totals more than $29.1 million in improvements to its transit system and infrastructure, including $3.9 million for METRO light rail improvements in Phoenix.

Also, as the region’s federal grant recipient for the Phoenix/Mesa urbanized area, the city of Phoenix was awarded additional funds to disburse to grant sub-recipients.

Official announcement of the award of funding from ARRA was made Aug. 20 by the Federal Transit Administration, with many “shovel ready” projects scheduled to start work in late 2009 or early 2010.

METRO July ridership

METRO light rail ridership totaled 750,551 boardings in July 2009. The average weekday ridership was 26,554, average Saturday ridership was 22,650 and average Sunday and holiday ridership was 15,151.

METRO provided service for the first time to patrons of July 4th events along the line. METRO served a total of 32,450 riders on Saturday, July 4 – 67 percent more than a typical Saturday in July.

July’s ridership is the lowest since METRO’s opening, but it comes at no surprise. “Our experience is in line with what occurs on the Valley’s bus system, arterial roadways and highways – there are just fewer people traveling the metro area in the summer months,” commented METRO CEO Rick Simonetta. “This is the valley before fall ridership peaks.”

It is also worth noting that on July 1 a regional fare increase initiated affecting bus and light rail fares. Although the summer heat and increased fare costs have an impact on ridership, METRO remains above its original projection of 26,000 average weekday riders.

METRO will continue to monitor ridership and report new totals on a regular basis.

Public meeting to review Central/Camelback park-and-ride expansion

A public meeting is scheduled to review and receive feedback on the design of the Central/Camelback park-and-ride expansion. Neighboring stakeholders are encouraged to attend to see the latest plans and talk with city of Phoenix and METRO staff.

The proposed park-and-ride expansion would extend west to 7th Ave. from the existing 135-spaced parking lot on the southwest corner of Central Ave. and Camelback Rd. The current design calls for the additional space to provide 165 – 175 more parking spaces and be entirely shaded using shade canopies.

This project is funded through American Recovery and Reinvestment Act funds provided to the city of Phoenix. It is scheduled for completion by summer of 2010.

Transit agencies to be honored for accessibility efforts

METRO light rail and Valley Metro are honored to be the shared recipients of the 2009 ADA Liberty Progress Award. The award will be presented by the Arizona Disability Advocacy Coalition (AzDAC) this Friday, July 24.

The ADA Liberty Progress Award is granted to a community organization or advocate whose intent and actions embrace the accessibility, inclusion and advancement of Arizonans with disabilities. METRO and Valley Metro were selected as this year’s recipients for involving passengers with disabilities in the design, development and execution of Valley transit services.

METRO included people with disabilities in every step of its implementation including the planning, construction and start-up phases. METRO utilized an ADA Advisory Board, made up of representatives from all disability groups, to assist in the development of ADA-compliant design. METRO Community Advisory Boards provided opportunities for feedback and access to staff during construction for people with disabilities to voice their concerns and have any issues addressed.

Valley Metro involves the input of passengers with disabilities in the design or retrofit of transit vehicles; has a customer service department that is knowledgeable of disability related needs; and provides fixed route training specifically for passengers with disabilities.

This award and others will be presented at AzDAC’s annual awards program – this year titled “Coming Full Circle: Getting Back to the Original Intent of the ADA” – on Friday at the Arizona state capital. This program is celebrated annually in conjunction with the anniversary of the passage of the Americans with Disabilities Act; 2009 marks the Act’s 19th anniversary.

METRO ridership totaled 815,566 boardings in June 2009. The average weekday ridership was 29,469, average Saturday ridership was 24,372 and average Sunday and holiday ridership was 17,440.

METRO attributes the current decline in ridership to typical reductions in travel regionwide during the summer including breaks for ASU and other schools, summer travel and departure of winter visitors. “We expect to have ridership peaks again in the fall and look forward to closing out the year strong,” said METRO CEO Rick Simonetta.

Avoid the line – buy your July 4th all-day pass now

On this July 4th holiday, the cities of Phoenix and Tempe will hold celebrations that are conveniently located along the METRO light rail line. A special July 4th pass has been created that will keep passengers, who buy in advance, out of any lines at the fare vending machines on this date.

This special pass is pre-validated, or date-stamped, for July 4, 2009 and valid for that date only. Passes can be purchased online or at select transit centers.

The passenger benefit is in the pass’ pre-validation. Normally, all-day passes – even those purchased in advance – have to be validated on the day of use; if using light rail, validation, as well as sales, occur at the fare vending machines. Major events tend to create heavy traffic at METRO fare vending machines.

An all-day pass provides round-trip service or more in one day. An all-day pass costs $2.50 through the end of June. July 1 initiates the regional fare increase making an all-day pass $3.50.

METRO Board approves weekend service extension

The METRO Board of Directors approved a measure that will extend METRO’s service hours on Friday night/Saturday morning and Saturday night/Sunday morning until past 2 a.m. The measure was brought before the Board as result of both passenger feedback and input from businesses along the line.

Beginning as early as July 1, METRO will offer its last full trip of the day at 2 a.m. Saturday and Sunday mornings, arriving at the opposite end of the line at 3 p.m. METRO will continue to provide 20-minute service in this extended period.

The estimated fiscal and maintenance impact for extended weekend service is $254,500 annually to the METRO operating budget.

The Board also stipulated that an evaluation of ridership and costs associated with the service extension occur after six months.

Launch of “One in One Million” contest!

METRO exceeded one million riders in April with 1,044,135 total boardings. “This is a significant milestone for a transit agency,” said METRO CEO Rick Simonetta. “We’re sincerely appreciative of our riders for making light rail a part of their lives.”

To put the spotlight on the millions of METRO riders, today marks the launch of a contest to hear their stories; one will be rewarded.

METRO’s “One in One Million” contest asks passengers to share a positive experience from on board a METRO train or station area. The stories will be posted online in June for the public to enjoy. One entrant will be randomly selected at the end of May to receive behind-the-scenes access of METRO. Arizona State University Commencement and Arizona Dbacks game - METRO May 13, 2009 service plan‏

METRO will run all available trains to service ASU Commencement goers, Arizona Diamondbacks’ fans and light rail commuters on Wednesday, May 13.

While system capacity will be maximized, passengers should expect crowds on board the trains and at METRO park-and-rides and delays.

METRO requests that passengers be patient, plan ahead and give themselves more time to travel to their destination.

METRO is a convenient way to get to and from Sun Devil Stadium for the commencement ceremony. Below are the details needed for a more informed and smooth roundtrip:

METRO will operate regular service until 6 p.m. All guests have been encouraged by ASU to arrive no later than 5 p.m.; gates open as early as 1:30 p.m.

Westbound passengers coming from the East Valley should de-board at the University Dr./Rural light rail station.

Eastbound passengers coming from the North or West Valley should de-board at the Veterans Way/College light rail station.

Bus shuttles will be provided from these stations to the stadium’s north entrance from 2:30 – 6 p.m. Shuttles are for ticketed passengers only.

Walking is also a viable option. The walk from either station to the entrance is approximately three-fourths of a mile, potentially as quick as waiting for a bus shuttle. ASU volunteers and signage will provide direction to the entrance.

For attendees that arrive at either station after 6 p.m., shuttles to the stadium will no longer be in operation; walking becomes the only option.

From 6 – 9:30 p.m., METRO is prohibited from operating between the Veterans Way/College and University Dr./Rural stations, or in front of Sun Devil Stadium, due to security restrictions. Bus shuttles will provide a temporary bridge between the two stations.

By the end of commencement, METRO will return to regular service. No shuttle service will be provided post-event; however, the stadium’s south entrance will be open.

Dbacks attendees

Diamondbacks game attendees planning to use light rail will travel during the peak commencement arrival and departure periods (depending on when the game ends).

METRO encourages fans to allow for more time to get to and leave from Chase Field. More patience will be required unless passengers elect to travel to the game before 3 p.m. and from the game after 10:30 p.m.

For East Valley fans who will ride to the game after 6 p.m., expect a delay as a result of the bus bridge between the University Dr./Rural and Veterans Way/College stations. Passengers will be asked to get off at University/Rural station, board a bus that will transport them to the next station at Veterans/College where they can continue their light rail trip.

Game begins at 6:40 p.m.

Commuters

Afternoon commuters can expect a regular service level until 6 p.m., but crowds and delays should be assumed.

From 6 – 9:30 p.m., commuters can expect a delay as a result of the bus bridge between the University Dr./Rural and Veterans Way/College stations. Passengers will be asked to get off at either station, board a bus that will transport them to the next station where they can continue their light rail trip.

Notes

The peak ridership periods for these events will be from 3 – 7 p.m. and 9 – 11 p.m. Passengers should expect standing room only on board the trains, crowds at the stations and park-and-rides and the potential for waiting for more than one train or bus shuttle.

Event goers should purchase an all-day pass for roundtrip service. An all-day pass eliminates the need to wait in a second line to buy another single ride pass when leaving the event. Platinum Pass/U-Pass users, validate before each ride.

METRO to serve Arizona Diamondbacks fans

Free parking at METRO park-and-rides

If you take METRO light rail to an Arizona Diamondbacks game, METRO will provide a return trip, even in the event of extra innings. METRO encourages the use of light rail and its free park-and-rides to attend Arizona Diamondbacks home games.

In working with the venue, METRO will understand game attendance and progression to have return service planned appropriately.

Upon a game’s dismissal, trains will be queued to take passengers east or westbound from the 3rd Street stations. Third Street/Washington is the westbound platform; 3rd Street/Jefferson is the eastbound platform. Attendees are urged to arrive at the station immediately following the game’s close.

METRO staff will be present for the first week and a half of the Diamondbacks season to assist passengers with safe and seamless return trips.

Passengers are encouraged to purchase an all-day pass when they first board or use existing fare media (i.e. a 3-day, 7-day, 31-day pass or Platinum Pass) to save time. An all-day pass or more eliminates the need to wait in line to buy another single ride pass when leaving the event.

METRO concerned with the Sherriff’s Office new inmate transportation plan

Since yesterday’s announcement by the Maricopa County Sheriff’s Office to transport inmates on light rail, METRO has received passenger feedback expressing concern for their personal and family safety.

METRO’s goal is to provide a safe, secure and reliable journey for its passengers. Any situation that creates concern for passengers and discourages ridership is of great concern to METRO.

The METRO light rail vehicle, much like any public transit vehicle, is not a controlled environment and not designed for this application. Transporting inmates using public transportation is not a common practice nationally and has not occurred locally on the Valley’s bus system.

It is anticipated that the METRO Board of Directors will consider a resolution requesting the Sherriff’s Office to reconsider this proposal in light of concerns expressed by Valley residents. METRO would welcome an opportunity to discuss with the Sherriff’s Office better solutions that meet everyone’s needs.

Limited Sunday service for P.F. Chang’s Rock ‘N’ Roll Marathon

In accommodation of the P.F. Chang’s Rock ‘N’ Roll Arizona Marathon and ½ Marathon on Jan. 18, METRO light rail will limit morning service to stations north of McDowell Rd. The following stations will be without light rail service until approximately 10 a.m., or until the race has cleared:

· 19th Avenue/Camelback Road

· 7th Avenue/Camelback Road

· Central Avenue/Camelback

· Campbell/Central Avenue

METRO will service the rest of the line – from McDowell/Central Avenue to Main/Sycamore – with regular service hours and additional trains and frequencies to support event patrons. METRO will offer 10-minute service before and during the race when traditional weekend frequency is every 15 minutes.

The entire line will re-open once police have indicated the marathon has cleared and it’s safe to proceed, approximately 10 a.m.

There are also significant bus detours as a result of this event. Select routes in Phoenix, Scottsdale and Tempe will be impacted. All transit riders are strongly advised to consult www.valleymetro.org or call customer service at (602) 253-5000 for route detour updates and give themselves extra time to reach their destination.

Fares needed on board METRO tomorrow, Jan. 1, 2009

After five successful days of free rides, carrying upwards of 280,000 people on board METRO, tomorrow begins revenue service. Fares will be required with the rollout of service on Thursday, Jan. 1 at 4 a.m.

Fares can be purchased from METRO fare vending machines – a minimum of two per station area – or existing bus fare media can be used. Because METRO and bus service share the same fare system, pricing and passes are also the same and can be use interchangeably from bus to rail, rail to bus.

Fares start at $1.25 for a single ride (on bus or rail, not both) and up to $45 for a 31-day pass. Passes must be activated before boarding.

An all-day, 3-day, 7-day or 31-day pass only needs to be activated once; with activation, the pass will be stamped with its expiration date. If you have a platinum pass (or plastic bus card), you must tap this card on the orange validator pad located on the fare vending machines before each boarding.

And make sure to keep your pass handy as METRO works on a proof-of-payment system; you are likely to run into a security officer who will ask to see your valid transit pass. If you cannot present a valid pass, citations can be issued ranging from $50 - $500.

Pedestrian Friendly

· West side is hard to walk

· Not comfortable to stroll, not exciting

· Parts are good

· North of Thomas is hot and dusty

· Traffic is bad and mean

· South of Thomas, several locations where there are no sidewalks. Lovely.

· No – not a comfortable street to stroll along – gaps, not as exciting on Central

· Some places, north of Thomas, facilities but not friendly, south of Thomas, attractive but lack facilities

· Best way to get Downtown increasing access from the east to freeway

· Less car friendly not so much; make it less car friendly to improve it, less cars

· Lack of sidewalk is a huge problem
